JUAN GOMEZ-NOVY, Associate
Juan Gomez-Novy has been a significant member of the Moule and Polyzoides team since 1997. He
holds a Master of Architecture and Urban Planning degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Gomez-Novy has considerable experience in both architecture and urban planning, having worked on a wide variety of projects including greenfield developments, urban infill, and civic and institutional projects. He is currently managing three specific plans: the Parklands, a 487-unit, 67 acre traditional neighborhood development (TND) in Ventura, California; the Olsen/Beechwood Specific Plan, a 1,347-unit, 472-acre TND in Paso Robles, California; the North Newhall Specific Plan, a 213-acre mixed-use project in Newhall, California that provides 650 residential units and 800,000 sf retail, office, and flex space; and the Village at Canada Larga Master Plan, a 1,000 unit mixed-use TND in Ventura, California.
Mr. Gomez-Novy’s previous planning experience includes the Downtown Ventura Specific Plan (the first form-based zoning code in California), the Atlantic Avenue Housing Development Master Plan (a neighborhood revitalization project in central Long Beach that incorporates 53-units of affordable housing), the Long Beach Civic Center/Lincoln Park Renovation (a master plan proposing ways to resuscitate the city's civic heart), the City of Ventura Downtown Streetscape Project (proposing ways to stitch together a downtown split from its oceanic shoreline by a freeway), and the Beverly Hills Town Square (a public plaza in the heart of the Beverly
Hills business triangle).
His architecture experience includes numerous housing and institutional projects including Meridian Court, a 10 unit courtyard housing project in Pasadena, and the Scripps College Athletic Facility and Pool. Mr. Gomez-Novy is also well-versed in computer aided design and desktop publishing and has been instrumental in the coordination and execution of various master plan and specific plan documents, presentation boards, and other materials critical to the successful implementation of various projects.
Prior to joining Moule & Polyzoides, Mr. Gomez-Novy spent two years with the construction management firm Swinerton & Walberg in San Francisco gaining valuable exposure to the methods and processes of major construction. Projects included the VISA World Headquarters Building, a twelve-floor, 300,000 square foot office building in Foster City, California, and Cesar Pelli's renovation of One Market Plaza in San Francisco.
An ardent researcher on traditional urbanism, he was a member of a University of Texas at Austin research team that measured and documented sixteenth-century churches, atrios, and plazas of ten towns outside Mexico City. Mr. Gomez-Novy recently co-wrote an article with Stefanos Polyzoides for the Journal of the Southwest chronicling the urban deterioration of Tucson’s historic core.
Mr. Gomez-Novy has received several awards including the American Institute of Architects School Medal for Excellence in the Study of Architecture and the 1997 UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning Design Thesis with Distinction Award. He also received the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning Merit Awards for the years 1994–95 and 1995–1996.
