This project is a streetscape plan for two important thoroughfares in the City of Montclair’s downtown: Arrow Highway and Fremont Avenue. It is the result of a three-month collaboration between the City of Montclair and the consultant team and represents a radical departure from the typical sprawl trends that have characterized this postwar suburb since the 1960s.
Arrow Highway will be redesigned as a narrower four-lane thoroughfare, allowing for parallel parking along its curves and establishing space for a central median. By creating a rich landscape of canopy and palm trees, we will transform this regional arterial into a picturesque downtown passage. Fremont Avenue will also be narrowed from a four-lane connector to a verdant two-lane street with wide sidewalks and flowering trees. The redesign of Arrow and Fremont will generate “complete streets” by narrowing their right-of-way to encourage walkability and the use of diverse transportation modes, including cars, buses, bicycles and foot traffic.
