Consisting of 53 affordable rental units, the site occupies two city blocks on the west side of Atlantic Avenue between Twentieth and Hill Streets. In order to preserve the residential character of the neighborhood, the duplexes and quadplexes facing the street are house-like in massing, scale and architectural detailing and help to screen the higher density courtyard housing at the back of the lot. They also block views of the parking courts from the street.
The project proposes ways to transform the neighborhood into a memorable village center by implementing traffic-calming measures along busy Atlantic Avenue, which include the addition of a planted center median. A consistent street tree pattern was established, the relationship between the existing public library and local elementary school has been improved and facade improvements to existing businesses have been implemented.
