Mount Wilson Observatory Visitors’ Center
Los Angeles, California
Client: Mount Wilson Observatory
When it was founded in 1904, the historic Mount Wilson Observatory, located high above Pasadena in the San Gabriel Mountains, was home to the world’s largest telescope. Internationally renowned scientists have used the many pioneering instruments located there to make countless extraordinary astronomical discoveries. The Observatory continues this tradition today, with some of the most technologically advanced astronomical facilities in the world, enabling world-class science.
This project provides a new visitors’ center, including extensive on-site facilities to foster an understanding of Mount Wilson’s heritage and its continuing role in contemporary astronomy. Located in the spectacular Angeles Crest National Forest, the 12,000-square-foot addition comprises a museum building, an outdoor stargazing amphitheater and a residential inn with detached cottages. Centered on a large courtyard, the museum will house a variety of exhibition spaces, an auditorium and a café. Long without adequate outreach facilities, the Mount Wilson Observatory will, through this facility, educate the public and inspire future generations of scientists.
“Your efforts on our behalf have added immeasurably to our viability, accuracy and fundraising prospects. I can't thank you enough,” said Dr. Harold McAlister, Director, Mount Wilson Observatory.
