A public realm with thriving urban retail is an essential aspect of a successful town center.
by Stefanos Polyzoides (2013)
Stefanos Polyzoides gave four courses this year during Robert Gibbs's acclaimed Harvard GSD Executive Education program, "Urban Retail: Essential Planning, Design, and Management Practices." Robert Gibbs's course explored how proven principles of retail development can be combined with the best practices of New Urbanism, Smart Growth and architectural design to create successful and competitive mixed-use urban commercial centers.
Stefanos's four sessions, "Urban Retail: A Historical Survey of Its Architecture and Urbanism," "Old Town Pasadena: A Town Center and Its Constituent Parts," "Housing Design in the Context of Town Centers," and "Form-Based Codes and Town Center Design," included in-depth case studies with examples of a variety of successful urban retail.
